Koyaanisqatsi was one of the most influential movies I have ever seen. Perhaps it was because I had a strong sense of what was portrayed in the film, perhaps I was just fascinated by amazing cinematography, perhaps I was just in the perfect state of mind when I first saw it...
I managed to find it online now:
Here is the making of, including some very insightful interviews with the director Godfrey Reggio and the composer Philip Glass.
If you haven't seen all the films in the series I would encourage you to look into them and experience all of them in as Hi-Def a manner as you can. These films are journeys of the spirit.
Godfrey's main website is here.
One of the staples of the cinematography in these films is amazing timelapse with panning camera work during the timelapse.
Here is a great intro film into the principles of shooting timelapse.
Ross Ching films are here: Eclectic 01 Eclectic 02
It seems the popular trend with many filmmakers is to use Telescope engines that man and tilt to follow planets or stars. These versatile devices can be modified to work perfectly with digital SLR cameras. Here are two videos that explain the use of these devices.
Here is another group of filmmakers that designed a Pan/Tilt head for their camera made from electric screwdrivers.
Hopefully you will find these things as inspiring as I do.
Enjoy,
Mike
